Wedding Flowers & Affordability

During my three decades in the floral industry, I have participated in weddings ranging from extravagant, high-budget affairs on Martha's Vineyard to intimate courthouse ceremonies featuring only a single bouquet. Each of these events was distinctly beautiful. I maintain the strong conviction that regardless of a couple’s floral budget, the resulting arrangements can be tailored to be perfectly suited for every client.

I certainly appreciate luxury – there's nothing quite like a bouquet with peonies, ranunculus, sweet pea, dahlias, cosmos, or an arrangement composed entirely of cut Phalaenopsis orchids. Yet, it takes true artistry and the skill of an experienced designer to take more common flowers and transform them into something beautiful and eye-catching.

A common challenge these days is the inspiration provided by social media. Most Pinterest and Instagram posts feature extravagant, expensive, "show-stopper" arrangements. When brides send me these photos for a quote, I price them using the exact, high-end blooms shown, which can lead to disappointment because the product type and price expectation might not match. My response is always this: the same feeling or look can be achieved for a significantly lower cost.

We can achieve this by swapping out expensive flowers for less costly ones that share the same color or shape, or by focusing on replicating the overall style, whether airy or round. By thoughtfully arranging less expensive flowers in a specific color palette (monochromatic, pastel, or bright), an experienced designer can create a result that is virtually indistinguishable from the high-end version from just five feet away.

The current trend toward micro events and smaller weddings with conscientious budgets doesn’t mean that you can’t have both beautiful floral and fair prices when celebrating your special event, but it does mean that you’ll need a likewise conscientious, experienced, and skillful florist to put the entire package together.
